Style Library!

With the holidays over, and most of the decorations packed up safely and neatly for next season, now is the perfect time to curl up in front of the fire with a couple of good books on a chilly evening. With my sweetheart on the sofa beside me, and my two kitty companions, London and Paris, fighting for lap space, I love spending time with my personal collection of coffee table books on fashion, decorating, travel, art. Even my cup of hot tea is accessorised with a leftover candy cane hooked on the side, and my new favorite jammies from Santa make me one happy girl...

I was really inspired by Claudia's collection of great books from her photo above. Here are a few vintage books I found from online sellers on etsy that would be great additions to my collection, and probably yours, too! Have fun with these shops, they have lots of other great items, too, besides books to peruse!

This is actually two books--"The Forties in Vogue" and "Vogue's Book of Etiquette" available from Old To New on etsy. Both of these fun books reveal fashion, art and life during the 1940's, and are offer great insight to those of us who love vintage from that era.





This is a really great book I remember wanting when it came out in the early 1980's...it's full of very beautiful photos of celebrity women by the very famous Scavullo who was the photographer all the glamorous Cosmopolitan magazine covers of the time. "Scavullo Women" is from Rigo 61.





Full color images and stories of celebrities of a bygone era are recorded in this album of magazine editions..."Vanity Fair"-A Cavalcade of the 1920's & 1930's is from CircaCollection.
I'm sure we would be surprised at how this publication has evolved over the decades!

I couldn't care less that this dust jacket on this copy of "Erte at Ninety--The Complete Graphics" it ripped...I've always been such a fan of this artist! This is a large coffee table book with wonderful photos of this Art Deco wonder's work! This album of eye candy is from Good Lookin.

"Elegance" from 1964 gives a real look at the standards and social graces that women of that time where expected to achieve through their dress. I always love these etiquette types of books, and although lots of the expectations of the times seem dated to many, there still remains some basic information that I believe is always the yardstick to style. This seller,

I Have A Thing For You, has a huge online store that's lots of fun visiting.





If you love studying the history of fashion, this is a great little book for historical research. "Encyclopedie Illustree du Costume et de la Mode" is full of interesting sketches, illustrations and photos of costumes of the day, from Looking Glass House.






"A Survey of Historic Costume" is another great resource for students, fashion industry professionals or anyone interested in a thorough overview of Western dress from the ancient world to trends of today. From Clover City.





"Glamour Magazine Party Book" from 1965 seems like a fun read, especially this highlighted Cocktail Party section. It's planning chapters include those on manners, dressing, and even menu ideas! This chic little book is from Your Neck Of The Woods.

Now So LA offers this wonderful signed copy of Helmut Newton's "Sleepless Nights". Known for his edgy photos of women in the 1970's, he played a huge part in the fashion world of the time, and still influences photographers and editors today. This rare 1978 first edition would be a jewel in the crown of any fashionista's book collection!

Three Lovely Things!

Don't you just love flappers? These three lovelies are sexy, elegant and glamorous, no?

Here are three other lovely things from that era that I thought were not only special, but just plain fun!

Timeless Vixen has some of the best vintage clothing around, and this piece is no exception. The intricate cocktail dress is covered in metallic silver beaded fringe over an ivory French silk chiffon underlining, and features diamond cutouts and a scalloped hem, a common motif of the Art Deco period. What an exquisite piece to collect or how fabulous for a very chic bride?





I stumbled upon this seller, The Little Sister, and was blown away by her awesome shop of vintage items. When I saw this stunning rhinestone and mirror headband, I knew I had to include it in this post! This dazzling 1920's piece is full of fire to light up a blushing brides face, and is just one of several unique styles of headpieces she offers.




Today, we might not even think of wearing stockings, but a woman of this time would certainly have worn them! These are made of luxurious silk with seams up the back, of course, and and were made for Marshall Field's. My Great Grandmother Maude worked for them in Chicago...I wonder if she wore these...? French Blue Toile!

I've always loved anything that was made of Toile de Jouy, especially in the classic French blue!

Dita Von Teese in the most divine dress! Although this is not vintage, it would certainly have been just as pretty in the 1950's or 60's! She just nails this look like no other, every single time!



Here are a few other things I found today with this loveliest of toiles or at least inspired by them!

Upholstered in the most luxurious of quilted toiles, this set of six fabulous carved gilt chairs from Paris Couture Antiques are to die for! This is truly one of my favorite shops on etsy...it's like a candy store!




This intricate antique quilt would be lovely at the end of a bed or featured on a wall...I'd love to have it as an accent to my white Battenburg bedroom for a soft pop of color! It's available from EA Martin 6.




I even found these little blue and white sling backs...how fun to think ahead to a Spring Sunday brunch outdoors in these flats! Emma's Vintage.

Mixing this famous print with classic ticking isn't unusual, but the fact that the toile is early 20th century and the stripe is even older...19th century... just makes this accent pillow more unique! It's from Mary Jane McCarty.

Although this wonderful Royal Staffordshire soup toureen in English, it certainly bears influence of our featured print! This piece is from English Transferware, and this is another favorite shop of mine to peruse!

There are plenty of vintage yard goods around at all price points in toiles of just about every color of the rainbow! This is a small piece, from the 20's or 30's that would make a perfect pillow top or other small decorating or craft project! Such a pretty scene on this one!

Silvery Grey!

The grey, gloomy day outside didn't keep me down...it only inspired me to think about how beautiful silvery grey can be against a perfectly made up face all ready to meet your sweetheart out for a lovely, after the holidays, romantic dinner for two!

You can get this really beautiful faux mink stole for a song (really, you won't believe the price!) from Vintage Wise. This 1950's piece has the prettiest shading in the fur and is lined in a just as yummy lilac satin!



I think this dove grey wool cocktail dress is just perfect for a winter night dinner, don't you? It's also 1950's, and the skirt, like the wrap shown above, has lilac colored lining! I love that color combo, and I love the little bow and pleated hip detailing! From Flour Clothing.

What Are You Doing This New Year's Day?

Ahhh...another New Year to look forward to! How will you be spending the day?

I may stay in bed all day wrapped in fur, drinking champagne and dreaming of a new handbag for the season, while he watches football...



This will be the year I finally get a Chanel bag! Maybe this amazing bucket style with that darn gold chain I love so much! From Fashion Forward Com.

Here And There Vintage offers this very classic convertible style clutch in the prettiest off white from Coach.

This little ostrich number with it's bamboo handle and toggle closure, from Chez Selin, is cute...

I really like this little clutch designed in the 1960's by Ronay with it's lovely bone colored leather gathered into the prettiest pouch with decorative tassels. This is from Greatest Friend.

I couldn't leave out this quirky little white patent leather tote made in Holland...you must check out the fabulous red lining and cool pockets from Tajemo.

Another little gem lined in yummy red on the inside is this cute 1960's white leather cosmetic case. Available from Apocalypse Vintage.
